United States: Former CEO of ExxonMobil and "friend" of Russia Rex Tillerson confirmed as Secretary of State

Republicans had expressed reservations about this candidate who was hailed by Moscow as a "friend of Russia". But finally, the former CEO of ExxonMobil Rex Tillerson was confirmed, this Wednesday, to the position of Secretary of State by the Senate. He was to take the oath in the wake and officially become the head of the US diplomacy.

Tillerson got 56 votes for and 43 against. All Republicans supported him, as well as four Democrats. This is only the sixth senior official of the Trump government confirmed, while the Democratic opposition is making obstruction. The new chief of diplomacy arrives on mined ground.

In 2013, after more than 20 years of negotiating oil contracts, Tillerson received the Russian decoration of the Order of Friendship, the highest distinction reserved for foreigners. Above all, it has expressed itself in the past against the sanctions imposed by Westerners to punish the actions of Russia in Ukraine. While Donald Trump remains vague on the issue, John McCain, Moscow's fervent critic, warned that he was ready to engage in an arm wrestling in the Senate to prevent the lifting of sanctions.
