Fast food packaging contains potentially harmful substances

Fat-resistant packaging for pizzas, hamburgers and other ready-to-eat foods contains fluorinated substances, a small portion of which is potentially harmful, according to a study published on Wednesday.

Studies in humans suggest that perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl (PFASs) substances used in waterproof paper and cardboard in fast food packaging are linked to developmental problems in children, decreased fertility, increased Risk of cancer and thyroid problems, according to the US Agency for Toxic Substances and Diseases (ATSDR).

Previous studies have shown that these substances can be found in foods in contact with packaging.

This study, published in the US journal Environmental Science and Technology Letters, tested more than 400 samples of packaging from 27 fast food chains in the United States.

Almost half of paper and 20% of cardboard boxes, such as pizzas and fries, contained fluorine, a marker of highly fluorinated chemicals used to make stains resistant to stains, pots and pans -adhesive and waterproof clothing.
