The Kano State Hisbah Board is starting the medical screening process today for 1,800 prospective couples who have been selected for the first batch of the mass wedding program organized by the state government. The Public Relations Officer of the board, Lawan Fagge, revealed in an interview that these 1,800 couples were chosen from a pool of over 4,000 applicants who wished to benefit from the state-sponsored mass wedding.
During the screening, the selected couples will undergo tests for HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, genotype, and drug use. It is important to note that the medical screening is a mandatory requirement for participating in the mass wedding. Failing to attend the screening will result in automatic disqualification.
The mass wedding program was reintroduced by Governor Abba Yusuf's administration as a means of supporting girls, women, widows, and divorcees who desire marriage but lack the necessary resources. The government has allocated N800 million for the mass weddings, which will be used to provide furniture, food items, clothing materials, dowry, and capital for the 1,800 couples participating in the program.
