Husband from Anambra arrested for beating wife and secretly burying newborn

A recent report by Punch on September 28th, 2023, states that a man named Ifeanyi Ezenwankwo, who is in his middle age and belongs to the Nanka community in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, has been taken into police custody. He is accused of causing bodily harm to his wife, Ekwutosi, and burying a newborn baby in a shallow grave.

The report reveals that Ezenwankwo allegedly buried the newborn baby in order to hide his illicit relationship with a 16-year-old girl, whom he impregnated and who subsequently gave birth to the child. Ekwutosi, the wife of Ezenwankwo and a native of Agbiligba Nanka community, stated that she was injured when she discovered her husband burying the newborn baby and raised the alarm.

The incident was brought to light in a press statement issued by Chidinmma Ikeanyionwu, the Media Aide to Ify Obinabo, the Anambra State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare. The statement explains that the husband was promptly arrested by security officials, and the wife was rescued after the ministry was informed of the situation.

According to the statement, Ekwutosi Ezenwankwo, the wife, had refused to participate in her husband's criminal activities, which led to her alleged rescue from her husband, who is described as a ritualist. The wife disclosed that her husband frequently impregnated a 16-year-old girl and would subsequently arrange for the abortions. However, when the girl became pregnant again and the pregnancy could not be terminated, the husband's actions were exposed.

Ekwutosi recounted that she had noticed the inappropriate relationship between her husband and the young girl earlier and had warned him not to harm the unborn child. In response, the husband hid the girl in his quarters. She also revealed that her husband had threatened to kill her, which was not an isolated incident, as community members had previously rescued her from her husband's attempts to silence her.

The report further mentioned that the issue between the couple began when the husband married another woman and subsequently neglected his responsibilities towards Ekwutosi and their children.

The statement concluded by stating that the culprit had been arrested and was currently in police custody, while investigations into the matter were ongoing.
