United States President Donald Trump
grudgingly signed into law new sanctions
against Russia on Wednesday.
Moscow, however, said the move would
have a few consequences as it amounts to
a full-scale trade war and an end to hopes
for better ties with the Trump
administration.
Congress overwhelmingly approved the
legislation last week, passing a measure
that conflicts with the Republican
president’s desire to improve relations with
Moscow.
Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev
wrote in a Facebook post and on Twitter
that the Trump administration had
demonstrated “total weakness”.
“The US President’s signing of the package
of new sanctions against Russia will have a
few consequences. First, it ends hope for
improving our relations with the new US
administration. Second, it is a declaration
of a full-fledged economic war on Russia.
“Third, the Trump administration has
shown its total weakness by handing over
executive power to Congress in the most
humiliating way. This changes the power
balance in U.S. political circles.”
The new law allows Congress to stop any
effort by President Trump to ease sanctions
on Russia.
