A public official, Dr. Abubakar Danraka, has been given a life sentence for the crime of rape (sodomy) according to section 1 of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act (VAPP Act) of 2015. The Abuja High Court, presided over by Justice A. Akanbi-Yusuf, delivered the sentence after determining the defendant's guilt.
Dr. Abubakar, who previously held positions as the Chief Pharmacist of National Hospital, Abuja, and Senior Special Adviser (Technical) to the Director of the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development, was arrested on March 27, 2020, for sexually assaulting a minor.
The Director-General of the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Fatima Waziri-Azi, expressed her admiration for the judiciary's unwavering commitment to ensuring justice. She commended the judiciary for its consistent collaboration and support in implementing the VAPP Act, which ultimately led to this significant judgment. She regarded it as a triumph for the nation.
In their ongoing efforts to create a violence-free Nigeria, she pledged to continue working with all partners and stakeholders, scaling up their endeavors to secure more convictions and reduce impunity.
