"Daily Consumption of Sugary Beverages Increases Liver Cancer Risk in Women, Harvard Study Finds"

According to an article published in the Vanguard Newspaper on August 12th, 2023, researchers from Harvard Medical School discovered that women who drink one sugary beverage per day face an increased risk of developing liver cancer and a 68 percent higher risk of dying from liver disease. However, the overall number of deaths in the study was relatively low, with only 150 fatalities.

Interestingly, the study found no connection between liver cancer and artificially sweetened beverages, despite concerns about the potential link between aspartame and tumor development. Dr. Pauline Emmett, a senior research fellow at the University of Bristol, advises against consuming sugar-sweetened beverages on a daily basis due to their high calorie content and the increased risks of obesity, cancer, and liver disease.

The Women's Health Initiative (WHI) conducted a study involving 98,786 postmenopausal women aged 50-79 from 1993 to 2020. The results revealed that 6.8 percent of the participants consumed sugar-sweetened beverages daily, while 13.1 percent consumed artificially sweetened beverages daily.

The findings of the study were presented in "person years."

The study demonstrated that women who consumed sugary drinks had higher rates of liver cancer and deaths from chronic liver disease, whereas those who consumed three or fewer such drinks per month had lower rates.

The intake of artificially sweetened beverages did not show a significant association with mortality from chronic liver disease.

Furthermore, the study established that consuming one or more sugar-sweetened beverages per day was linked to a higher incidence of liver cancer and chronic liver diseases. The potential pathways for this association include obesity, increases in blood glucose levels, and the accumulation of fat in the liver.
