According to a report by The Guardian on September 20th, 2023, a Black student named Darryl George from Barbers Hill High School in Mont Belvieu, Texas, faced another suspension upon returning to school on Monday. This second suspension follows his initial suspension of over two weeks due to his loc hairstyle, which was considered a violation of the dress code of the Barbers Hill Independent School District.
The school district's dress code specifically states that male students' hair should not extend below the eyebrows or earlobes. Upon Darryl's return, school officials have requested a meeting with him and his mother to discuss further disciplinary actions regarding his hairstyle. The family has until Wednesday to meet with the school officials.
Allie Booker, an attorney representing the George family, expressed concerns that the school may attempt to expel Darryl. However, the family is adamant about not consenting to such an outcome. Previously, they were informed that if Darryl did not cut his hair, he would be placed in a Disciplinary Alternative Education Program (alternative school), according to the attorney.
This situation unfolded around the same time that Texas implemented the CROWN Act, a law aimed at preventing discrimination based on hair texture or protective hairstyles such as locs and braids.
Darryl's mother, Darresha George, mentioned that the family is considering taking legal action in response to the ongoing issues with the school's enforcement of the dress code.
In addition to the locs hairstyle, Darryl received reprimands for wearing frayed jeans, which also violated the dress code. The school offered him the option to change his clothes, but only if he agreed to cut his hair. When he refused, he was placed on in-school suspension.
The Barbers Hill Independent School District declined to comment on the matter, stating that it cannot discuss disciplinary issues involving students.
