Cough is a respiratory tract illness characterized by the forceful expulsion of air from the mouth, often accompanied by an explosive sound. It serves as a protective mechanism for the respiratory system, clearing irritants, fluids, mucus, and other substances from the airways. Coughing is an immune system response to combat foreign substances, expelling them in the form of mucus from the lungs.
The causes of cough include asthma, allergens, hay fever, heartburn, infections (such as the common cold, tuberculosis, and whooping cough), chest infection, chronic bronchitis, obstruction in the air sacs, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. Prolonged coughing can lead to unpleasant side effects, including chest pain, exhaustion, lightheadedness, and loss of bladder control. Additionally, coughing can disrupt sleep, social interactions, and work.
Although whooping cough is a distinct disease, it falls under the category of cough. If left untreated, cough may potentially contribute to the development of lung cancer.
