The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is at an advanced stage of introducing Computer Based Testing (CBT) for administering some of its examinations, according to Mr. Patrick Areghan, head of WAEC's national office.
Areghan made these comments in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria ahead of his planned retirement on October 1 after completing his three-year term. He sees introducing CBT as part of his vision for modernizing the organization.
While WAEC is making progress on plans for CBT, Areghan notes it is not as simple as some believe. Exams with practical or essay components would be difficult to administer via CBT. Additional challenges include many schools lacking computer literacy, facilities or electricity.
Areghan hopes to see WAEC conducting CBT exams in the near future, beginning with objective questions and later moving to theory and practical exams. He recognizes not all schools will be ready, so a hybrid paper-based and CBT system may be needed.
Beyond CBT, Areghan wants to see WAEC become fully digitalized under his successor. Certificates, results verification and other functions have already been digitized on his watch. His vision is for WAEC to transform into a technology-driven examination body with greater international presence.
Other achievements highlighted include the new digital security printing press and staff transportation benefits to improve morale. Areghan's proudest accomplishment is WAEC's consistent successful administration of exams, timely results and certificate issuance.
